Boomerang Bags is a global initiative aimed at reducing the use of plastic bags by engaging communities in making re-useable ‘Boomerang Bags’ as a fun, sustainable alternative.
Each Boomerang Bag is lovingly handmade by volunteers from the local community using donated, pre-loved materials, keeping the initiative local and sustainable.
Regular sewing sessions provide a platform to engage with different demographics of the community in a positive environmental action, raise awareness about current sustainability issues, as well as encouraging community connectedness and socialisation. They also provide a hands-on learning environment, allowing volunteers, community groups and students to gain valuable practical skills.
Once made, Boomerang Bags can be used as a means to start conversations, raise awareness and provide an alternative to plastic bags. Bags can be boomeranged to friends, family, colleagues or the bag-less stranger in front of you at the supermarket, used to wrap gifts, or stashed in your car or handbag so you’re never caught without a re-usable bag when you need one!
Our next sewing bee is Wednesday July 18, from 4pm – 6.45pm at Warragul Library Meeting Room. Join us for a cuppa and a chat, drop off your fabric donations or BYO sewing machine and stay awhile and create your own bag. No sewing skills necessary as there are plenty of other jobs like cutting and ironing fabric. We look forward to seeing you there.
